Designer Focus: St. Agni
St. Agni, with their cult favorite woven mule, is a refreshing and welcome new addition this spring. Soft supple leather fabrications offered in elegant shapes for the foot. A sandal line that is utilitarian and practical in use, yet sophisticated, and chic for those with discerning and refined preferences toward footwear. A true marriage of form and function. We talked to Lara and Matt Fells, the founder and designers behind the quietly luxurious Australia brand.
The brand's name stems from Lara's grandmother. "Agni is my Nona's name" Lara says. "Having always had an immense amount of respect and admiration for her selfless and caring nature, making her a saint in our eyes, made it quite natural to name the label St. Agni. Both designers passion for design was instilled at an early age. Having always had a desire to create something of their own, and a love of leather and the way it ages, Matt and Lara grew that passion over ten years leading up to founding the brand in 2014. St. Agni's aesthetic aims to capture the ease and freedom of the Australian lifestyle. The brand is based in idyllic Byron Bay surrounded by pristine beaches and luscious hinterland. Lara and Matt appreciate the beautiful east coast of Australia and appreciate being surrounded by so much natural beauty and feel freedom to can go at one's own pace. Take one look at the St. Agni space and a sense of calm, bright, clean optimism begins to wash you over.
The St. Agni sandal line consists of silhouettes that can be worn to the beach, in the city with a linen pant, on a plane, on a roadtrip, or around the house. Versatility in minimalism. Lara and Matt aim to create staple pieces, not statement, which can lend themselves to a variety of looks. Each pair of shoes is entirely handmade, from cutting the out the sole to building the heel out of solid leather. No two pieces of leather are identical so each pair has its own character. This also creates a low maintenance finished product. The leather ages beautifully on its own and leather treatment and fussy maintenance is not necessary (Although they do recommend waterproofing before first wear). Lara and Matt work closely with the craftsmen from the design stage right through to the finished product. "It is really a team effort and we are so lucky to work with such amazing people" the founders say. The craftsmanship comes through when you slip the sandals on foot. Supple, flexible leather is ready to mold to your foot. Not to mention the most comfortable, padded insole we've come across in a while. These sandals are made for walking, and will travel with you and transport you with ease, both near and far. Shop the edit of St. Agni footwear below.
